Together these countries form the Schengen zone. Several other countries, in which the Schengen Agreement has formally already entered into force, have not yet abolished border control, and thus remain outside the Schengen area.

All Schengen countries, with the exception of Norway and Iceland, are members of the European Union.

Five members European Union Have already signed the Schengen Agreement, but remain outside the Schengen area, since Passport control was not completely abolished (United Kingdom, Ireland) or they cancellation is only planned in the future (Bulgaria, Cyprus, Romania).

Denmark has a special status, enshrined in the Schengen Protocol to the Amsterdam Treaty of 1997, which allows Denmark not to participate in Schengen cooperation in a larger volume than existed at the date of the Amsterdam Treaty.
